The Story Behind
Gene J. Miller
Gene J. Miller is the author of WARNING: Short Stories for Middle School Boys Only, Because Girls Have Cooties!, a lively collection of fifteen humorous stories inspired by real childhood adventures. After a remarkable forty-four-year career in public education, teaching students from middle school through college,
Miller brings a unique understanding of adolescence, learning, and the experiences that shape young lives. His background as an educator gives the stories both authenticity and heart, blending humor with meaningful reflections about growing up.
The inspiration for the book began as a simple gift for his grandsons. Miller wanted to create bedtime stories that they could first listen to and later read themselves as they grew older. What began as a personal project soon evolved into a collection of memorable stories filled with adventure, friendship, and the challenges of early adolescence. Each chapter delivers both laughter and thoughtful lessons about the journey of growing up.
Raised in Delanco, New Jersey, along the Delaware River, Miller experienced a childhood shaped by exploration, imagination, and the freedom of the outdoors. From riverbanks to wooded trails, those early adventures provided many of the real-life moments that later inspired the stories in his book. His journey through schools in South Jersey eventually led to earning a degree in English and History from Glassboro State College, followed by a master’s degree in Educational Leadership from Rowan University.
While Miller’s writing career may have started later in life, his dedication to education spans decades. He spent many years teaching English and History to middle and high school students while also mentoring young people through coaching and school leadership roles. Today, through his writing and presentations, Gene J. Miller continues to share stories that celebrate imagination, humor, and the timeless experiences of growing up.
